Eighty Abrams tanks fired up at once, then pulled a quarter-mile forward on Interstate 15 to organize into formation. A few stayed behind, struggling to start. Mechanics’ vans raced to the stragglers.

Bill cranked up his music to drown out the tanks, but his old-school, foam headphones didn’t cover the growl of the war machines. It didn’t matter. Bill knew the words of the song by heart. He knew everything by Johnny Cash by heart.
